A little bit about me

I had never taken a photograph until my senior year in high school. While taking a photography class I became hooked and have been taking pictures ever since.

In college at California Lutheran College (now University) I took pictures for the school newspaper, yearbook and the Development Office. I spent many hours in the darkroom developing and printing hundreds of black and white photos. Then friends asked me to photograph their weddings.

While in seminary at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary I took pictures for the seminary newsletter. Photography has always been good to me.

But I had little time for it when I became a pastor. My first congregation was in Fort Bragg, California. It is a little town 180 miles north of San Francisco on the coast surrounded by redwood forests. It is as beautiful as it sounds. It was a great place to serve. Both of our children were born in Fort Bragg. I began in 1980 and learned a lot about being a pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church.

In 1990 I accepted a call to serve in Solvang, California. It is sometimes known as “the Danish capital of America.” It is located in the picturesque Santa Ynez Valley on the Central Coast of California. Tourism is a major source of its economy. The church architecture is very characteristic of a traditional Danish country church.

n 1997 I was called to Santa Maria, California on the Central Coast. I am currently serving in this great congregation. It is a healthy and caring place with many committed and faithful people. We are planning to build a senior retirement village on two and half acres of church property in the years to come.

We are engaged with meaningful ministry through Bible study in women’s circles, a men’s group and Christ Care small groups. There is significant caring for others through the Stephen Ministry program and the network of friendships in the congregation. It is blessing to serve God’s people here.

A second calling I believe I have received from God is through my travel and photographic ministry. Through Educational Opportunities Tours God continues to send me around the world. What I laid aside when I began pastoral ministry, now has returned in a way I never dreamed possible. I consider it a great privilege and honor that I get to travel and share God’s magnificent creation with others through my cameras. I am grateful to Educational Opportunities for sending me. And I thank God all the time for this incredible opportunity.
